My impressions of Sheffield

May 28th, 2008

I’ve spent the day in a rather sterile office building in Sheffield and have spent a surprisingly pleasant evening here now. Sheffield reminds me of Birmingham – the centre around where I am staying is lovely and modern with some gorgeous buildings. Arriving at the train station you’re greeted with a lovely fountain. There are a small number of quite nice restaurants and the hotel (the St Paul Mercure) is modern and has a decent selection of whiskey with waiters who seem to know what they’re doing.
However the place is deserted – even for a Wednesday there should be more people about – this is the reason I remember Birmingham – or as long as I can remember Cilla Black’s accent has grated but the centre of Brimingham is lovely at night – except it’s a wasteland – where the hell are all the people?

    Welcome to Sheffield!

The city centre is a bit deserted in the evenings, if you are still here then you need to venture out of the centre slightly. West Street (and the roads & squares running off it) is always madly busy, probably the drinking centre of Sheffield, also now home to many restaurants although most are chains.

Ecclesall Road is another fairly popular place to drink, again with quite a few places to eat.

London Road is also busy, but many people go there to eat out rather than to drink. There are loads of places to eat there – but mostly of the cheap & cheerful type.

Why is the actual City Centre so quiet? I don’t know – it used to be much busier!

This time of year is quiet anyway: school half term, lots of people away on holiday & many students are in the midst of exams.

    Hope you enjoyed your stay!
